Party like it's 1959 (or 2099)

The first time we laid our eyes on Blu Dot furniture it was at a much cooler and wiser friend's house. There the perfect media-storage unit was, in all its sleekness and refined-ness and clean lines-ness and high-design-ness, doubling as a display buffet. Oooh, it was so functional! And it was the perfect contemporary take on mid-century design. It was minimalist and artful and as pretty as a peach. Instantly, we were green with furniture envy.

We began to wonder: Could this clean and contemporary beauty magically make clutter disappear into the heavens, too? A decision had to be made: It was time to get rid of that IKEA furniture for good. We were settling, after all. We never truly loved it. It never truly loved us. It was just "good for the time being." Now it was finally time to move on. Time to experience the kind of furniture love we knew we deserved.

Thankfully, then, Design Within Reach Studio is holding a sneak-peak Blu Dot preview party tonight from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, featuring Blu Dot's latest prototypes and products launching at this year's International Contemporary Furniture Fair in NYC. Blizzard be damned, because not only will Blu Dot founders and designers John Christakos and Maurice Banks be on hand to talk about their lovely mid-century/ultra-modern furniture that doubles as art, but yummy cocktails will be there to greet guests, too.

Of course furniture that has two lives as functional and artful wouldn't throw a party that doesn't have a double mission: Local artists from mplsart.com will be showcasing their fabulous works, too.

The blu dot furniture, which had been slated to be in the showroom for one night only, will be in the studio through the weekend. The art will be on the walls up until June.
